Results of Chef's Challenge #2: The Salad Cook Off  by Dale Matthews

Another beautiful day was on tap for the second of our Northside Farmers Market Chef's Challenge Cook Off Series.

Preparing salads while market goers looked on were our brave participants:

Mimi Jett with a Greek Salad.

Valerie Holden with a Mediterranean Salad.

Suzette and Bianca with a 3-Bean German Salad.

Judges for the event were Satya Rhodes-Conway, 12th Ward City Councilperson, Michael Schumacher, 18th Ward City Councilperson, and James Franck, Northside Farmers Market.

Valerie Holden won both the Judges Award and the People's Choice Award. Congratulations to her on her dual win.

Valerie and Mimi Jett tied for best presentation of their cook areas.

Valerie will compete against last month's Hamburger Cook Off winner Tia Marshall, 2007's One Pot Cook Off winner Mike Basford, and other participants in our Grand Finale Meal Cook Off on September 14.

TomatillosTomatillo Salsa with Avocado

A tomatillo based salsa with avocado
added for body and texture.

Ingredients
6 - 8 medium tomatillos, chunked
2 garlic cloves, chunked
1 tsp salt
1 small onion, chunked
2 serrano chiles, chunked
fresh cilantro to taste
1 ripe avocado, peel and pit removed

Directions
1. In a food processor, process garlic and salt to a paste.
2. Add onion, chiles, tomatillos, and cilantro.
3. Process to make a rough puree.
4. Add the avocado and process to the desired smoothness. Serve at once.
