Soaking Sunday!
by Jan Montgomery, Northside Farmers Market Vendor

Last Sunday was certainly a challenge for the Market. It started out as a beautiful day and then the clouds started rolling in. Not sure of the time but I think it was around 9:30 a.m. or so, it started to rain. Rain is not usually a big challenge... but this storm was different.
The rain didn't bother us but then it started lightning and that's when we started to get a little concerned. We decided to leave the Market and go home because of the lightning. The water was ankle deep as we were packing up our produce and trying to get our tents down and just get them into our truck. It was quite windy and our containers were blowing away and then floating in the water. Once we got our truck loaded, we tried to help Peg Whiteside pack up.
As we were getting in our truck, the water was really deep (up to my knees on my side of the truck). The water was awfully cold and it was moving very, very fast. I had to hang on to the side of our truck to get in. The storm drain was ahead of our truck so that made the whole situation just a little more challenging. Lots of water, lots and lots and lots. Luckily, we were able to back out of our spot without any problem.
Loyal customers that came out before the storm kept telling us that there was a bad one heading our way. We just didn't realize how bad it was and how windy it was going to get! We were thoroughly soaked. The weather has never been that bad at the Market before.
Good news! We plan on having strawberries this coming week. Our strawberry patch is not located right on our immediate property and that is a very good thing, as the field behind our house is completely under water. Unfortunately, our first planting of green beans was flooded out and we have had to dig up some of our plants already so that we could re-plant them when the soil dries out. Like many people in the area, we got home on Sunday and found 8 inches of water in our basement. We had a lot of rain to deal with.
It was a real event on Sunday. Watching the Market Managers and volunteers trying to help everyone the best that they could was wonderful. Everyone did what they could in a very short amount of time. What a team we have established between Volunteers and Vendors.
I can truly say that we are very proud to be part of this Northside Market!
One of your soggy vendors,
Jan & Rudy Montgomery
