No Noahs at the Northside Market but Farmers Need Our Support
by Jim Franck

A quick survey of our vendors indicated that most of them, fortunately, are on higher ground so suffered minimal damage from the onslaught of rain over the past weeks.

pegPeg Whiteside of Earthrise Farm in Waunakee said she and her animals made it through relatively unscathed, despite a little water in the basement, even though many of her low-lying neighbors did not fare so well.

drallesDon and Marilyn Dralle of Coyote Creek Angus Beef in Mineral Point also said that their animals were OK but that this week portended a lot of field work to get wet hay up and off of the ground.

jimmyJimmy Hudson of the Monroe area did suffer some losses. "Our bok choy, spinach, romaine, and Great Lakes iceberg lettuce were completely washed out," he said. "But we'll just plant again. We'll be OK."

nhiaNhia Vang said his produce pickings were slim, not so much due to product loss, as the wet fields made harvesting slower going so he wasn't able to bring as much to the market today. On the positive side, he was just about sold out by 11:30 a.m. as were most of our produce vendors.

jan and rudyOn the downside, Jan and Rudy Montgomery of J&R Farms in Spring Green were not able to make it to the market this Sunday due to rain-induced difficulties on their land. We'll check with them this coming week to see how they're doing and report back.

Reports are that state-wide extensive field damage will drive up consumer prices for all produce so our vendors' good fortune and high productivity will mean that top quality produce will still be available to our Northside Farmers Market at regular prices, at least for the near term.

Nonetheless, record fuel prices and difficult harvesting have put a strain on many of the farmers in our community. They are relying even more on the income they derive from vending at our market.

Northside Farmers Market customers can help the market continue to thrive by purchasing as much as possible from our local farmer vendors. Customers will continue to get the highest quality foods at some of the best prices available. It's a win-win for everyone! Please tell friends and neighbors about the importance of shopping locally!
