The Healthy Ridge Farm
Article By Jamie Gratrix

With strawberry season pretty much over, what else can you look forward to? Door County strawberries and cherries from Healthy Ridge Farm!

This Sunday, the Northside Farmer's Market will be welcoming Healthy Ridge Farm to our list of vendors. Healthy Ridge Farm is a small, family run farm located in Door County. Amy & Daniel Barnard were married in 2002 and started their farm together in the spring of 2003 in order to produce natural, locally grown, high quality produce.

Crops grown on Healthy Ridge Farm include strawberries, sweet cherries, apricots, peaches, plums, pears, apples, blueberries, asparagus, garlic and more. In addition to produce, Healthy Ridge Farm will be selling their homemade jams and jellies.

Check out their website at www.healthyridgefarm.com and be sure to stop by their stand this month at the Northside Farmer's Market!

Sun Salad
An Original Recipe by Angela Trentadue

My general rule for creating a dish is, “if it grows together, it goes together.” Meaning, vegetables that are in season together usually taste really good together, but it’s easy to stay with common combinations. With that thought, I decided to pair up a couple of things that I had in abundance but had never really thought to put together before - basil with sugar snap peas and cucumbers. If you don’t have sunflower oil, olive oil would be a fine substitute.

In a large bowl, add:

1 pound sugar snap peas, de-stringed and sliced, crosswise into 1/2” chunks
1 large cucumber, peeled, quartered lengthwise, seeds removed and cut into 1/4” slices
4 scallions, cleaned and ends trimmed, sliced into thin rounds
1 bunch fresh basil, leaves removed from stem and roughly chopped

In a skillet over medium heat, toast until golden brown:
1/4 c raw sunflower seeds
Set aside to cool.

Drizzle over vegetables:

Juice of 1 lemon
4 tbs sunflower oil
1/2 tsp sea salt
Gently mix all ingredients together to coat evenly with dressing and chopped basil. Toss in one ice cube, if you have it, and allow salad to sit for about 10 or 15 minutes. Adjust seasoning, adding more lemon juice, oil or salt to taste. Just before serving, add sunflower seeds and give it one last stir.

Market Update
Article and photo by Chris Moore

Jim and Jackie Hudson will be bringing 3 different types of eggplant next market including a skinny variety. J&R Farms will continue to bring more corn, Hungarian peppers, and blueberries. And make sure you try the uniquely flavorful Tuscan kale from Pederson Produce. Many vendors report that they will be bringing Broccoli.

Raspberries are in full swing – did you know that some of our vendors are up at 4 AM the morning of the market to pick them? Now that is freshly picked! And have your tried the yellow, sweeter variety of raspberry?

Polly Jane is planning on bringing hot pickled veggies and fruit flavored vinegar. You should also know that her raspberry jam is made of raspberries from Jim and Jackie Hudson’s farm. Juan Torres has available some unique veggies including Fava beans.

At the market you will find sun gold tomatoes, green/yellow beans, kohlrabi, lettuce, zucchini, potatoes, rhubarb, radishes, beets, garlic, kale, onion, and squash. Also swiss chard, snow peas, cabbage, romaine and mixed lettuce, French baby beans, basil, dill, and even popcorn.

Don’t forget to get a supply of fresh clover honey, peanut butter (including the spicy Asian Jazz), and cheese. Both Farmer John’s Cheese (fresh cheese curds, colby calienti, romano, etc) and Saxon Homestead Creamery have a wonderful variety of delicious cheeses. In fact, Big Ed’s from Saxon Homestead Creamery, made it into a recipe at the Washington Post!

Earth Rise Farms and CC Angus have a great selection of different meats for you to choose from.

Fresh from the oven from Honey Bee Bakery you will find loaves of whole wheat bread, potato bread, sharp cheddar biscuits, cherry cornmeal muffins, raspberry rhubarb pie tartlet’s and, depending on when you get there, a cream puff or two. And both Cupcakes A Go Go and Capital City Cookies will be back this Sunday.

If you still want plants for your garden, go no further than Pederson Produce. He has Thai Basil (with licorice overtones), rosemary, German winter thyme, and amigo mix celosia plants.

Get your veggies and much more at your Northside Farmers Market – a place to meet neighbors and the people who grow and produce your food!
